Most impactful work today happens across departments — not neatly within a single function. And yet, traditional org charts and HRIS platforms don’t reflect that. So we set out to fix it.

A year and a half ago, we started exploring how to bring matrix team structures into ChartHop. We published a blog post about our early thinking — this one — and to our surprise, it quickly became one of our most-read resources of all time. That told us something important: matrix teams aren’t rare. For almost any organization, they’re core to how work gets done.

That exploration kicked off a much bigger journey — one that led us to create Matrix Teams in ChartHop. Or, more broadly, Custom Groups.

Some examples of Matrix Teams and Custom Groups are: Product Pods, ERGs, Regional Account Teams, Business Units, GTM Launch Teams, Event Committees, M&A Tiger Teams, Guiding Initiative Teams, and much more.

After a lot of research, design, and iteration, we’re excited to announce: Matrix Teams is now available in ChartHop.

For Matrix Teams to be successful, we knew it had to meet specific conditions. These are:

  1. Organizations define their own groups. No one-size-fits-all. You can create whatever teams, squads, pods, or groups make sense for your org.
  2. Different structures for different needs. Some groups are flat (like ERGs), others are structured (like a Product Line with nested Pods).
  3. Visualized like an org chart — but different. Instead of reporting lines, you see who’s a part of each group, and if groups are lacking critical membership or positions.
  4. Custom roles within each group. For example, ERGs might need to have Lead, Co-lead, and Executive Sponsor positions, while Product Pods might need to have Lead PM, Lead Designer, Lead Developer, Lead Support, and Lead Marketer.
  5. Granular access controls. You can set who can see and who can modify each group. A company-wide ERG? Open to all. A sensitive M&A Tiger Team? Locked down to a few execs.
  6. Share with Teams. You can now share Resources (intranet docs), Dashboards, Data Sheets, and more by choosing the team itself — not just individuals.
  7.  Membership history over time. ChartHop tracks when someone joined or left a group, or when groups started or came to a close — critical for context and institutional memory.
  8. Full analytics support. Use Matrix Teams in dashboards — whether as dimensions (“headcount by Product Pod”) or filters (“sales by Regional Team”).
  9. ChartHop AI understands your teams immediately. As soon as a team is created, AI can incorporate it into insights, org analysis, and more.

Every single one of those capabilities is built into ChartHop Matrix Teams today. Here’s a short walkthrough video to give you a first look:

Matrix Teams turn ChartHop into your system of record for cross-functional collaboration. It’s easy to set up, immediately useful, and — like all the best tools — open-ended enough that I can’t wait to see how our customers use it.

This is one of my favorite kinds of features: the kind where I don’t know where our customers will take it. I can’t wait to see the creative ways they will use Matrix Teams — and I’m looking forward to every one of those surprises.
